Safety of Frontline Plus

Finding fleas and ticks in your pet is not only disgusting (for most of us, anyhow), but also an indication that your pet's health could suffer. Fleas and ticks carry diseases, including Lyme disease, and cause your pet to itch and scratch, leading to skin irritation. Frontline Plus, available for cats and dogs, is a popular topical treatment against fleas and ticks.
  1. Efficacy

    • A tick-free cat is a happy cat.

Frontline Plus has a good reputation among veterinarians and pet owners, and is known to be effective and safe in most cases. It usually kills fleas within 24 to 48 hours.

    Side Effects

    • Frontline Plus gives your pet a slight burning sensation for a few seconds when it is applied, and some pets experience skin irritation at the application site. Some dogs are allergic to Frontline Plus.

    Vulnerable Pets

    • Frontline Plus is usually safe for puppies and kittens after 8 weeks.

Frontline Plus can be applied to puppies and kittens age 8 weeks or older, and to pregnant and nursing dogs and cats.

    Ingredients

    • The active ingredients in Frontline Plus are fipronil, which kills adult fleas, and methoprene (the "plus" that makes it different from regular Frontline), which kills flea eggs and larvae.

    How It Works

    • The product is time-released through your pet's natural body oils.

To apply Frontline Plus, you pour a small amount of premeasured medication directly onto your pet's skin (between the shoulder blades, where your pet can't lick it off) about once a month.

The medication attaches to your pet's hair follicles and is released over time through its body oils.

    Talk To Your Vet

    • There are all sorts of flea and tick medications on the market. If you worry about the safety of a particular product, talk with your veterinarian about what alternatives might be right for you and your furry friend.
