How to Get Rid of Dog Pee Smell in Carpet

Dogs are companion animals that add love, entertainment and joy to your life. Unfortunately, they occasionally add odors to your home when they urinate on the carpet. Dog urine in the carpet should be treated quickly in order to prevent stains and set-in odors. There are times, however, when treating the stain immediately is not an option. When this happens, there is still hope--you just have to try another approach to removing the stain and odor from your floor. With a little effort you can prevent dog urine odors from getting out of hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a cup of clean water over the affected area to thoroughly saturate the area.

    • 2

Use a wet vac (or a shop vac) to vacuum up as much of the liquid from the area as you can. You can also use paper towels for this step but be aware that a wet vac is more effective at removing the liquid and potential for urine odors.

    • 3

Create a solution of 1 part dish soap to 3 parts water. Pour the solution over the affected area and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.

    • 4

Use paper towels to blot the solution from the carpet.

    • 5

Rinse the area with clean water and then use paper towels or a wet vac to remove any remaining moisture in the area. (If you use paper towels, allow the carpet to dry for 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.)

    • 6

Sprinkle the area with baking soda after it has completely dried. Allow the baking soda to sit on the area for 20 minutes.

    • 7

Vacuum the area to remove all of the baking soda.

    • 8

Fluff the carpet using a brush or your hand.
