How to Find Dog Urine on Carpet With Black Light

Part of the responsibility of owning a dog is cleaning up after it. This includes housetraining accidents. Although you may be upset about the dog urine stains in the house, the best way to deal with them is to find them and clean them with a product that will discourage your dog from going there again. Many urine stains will be immediately visible but older stains or those in tricky locations may be harder to spot. Using a black light device can help you find those dog urine stains you may have missed.

Wait until it is evening or nighttime. Turn on the black light device and turn off all the inside lights in the area.

    • 2

Start in the areas that your dog has urinated before or that you can detect the strong smell of urine. Walk slowly throughout the area holding the black light device close to the carpet. You should leave it about one to two inches from the carpet for the best viewing.

Locate the dog urine stains. The black light will make the dog urine fluoresce or shine brightly. However, it will not shine bright white. Instead, it will have a slightly yellowish or greenish tone.

Be thorough and imaginative. You may have to go over an area several times before spotting the dog urine. Check corners, under furniture, and in the back of closets. Your dog may have left urine stains somewhere and then furniture or other objects were moved over it.
