How to Enter Your Dog in a Dog Show

Participating in a dog show is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both the dog and the handler. Most dogs thrive in the spotlight, strutting about and having fun while in the competition circle. Competing in dog shows is also a bonding experience for the handler and pet, as much time is spent on training and grooming. In order to take part in this experience, there are a few things you, as a potential dog show handler, should know.

Ensure that you are registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). If you would like your dog to compete in an AKC show, it must be purebred and already registered with the club.

    • 2

Check with your local newspaper, pet store, radio or television station for advertised dog show competitions. It is possible to find out the time in which your dog's breed will be judged; however, it is helpful to attend the entire show to learn about the different aspects of dog shows and to see how other handlers show their dogs.

    • 3

Train your dog to compete in shows. The AKC offers classes on how to show your dog and the aspects of competition. These classes can offer tips and techniques on walking in the ring, as well as how to present your dog to the judge.

Learn how to properly groom your dog based on its breed. Talk with fellow handlers about how to groom or consult a groomer. If you cannot groom your dog, you can hire a groomer to do it for you. However, you will need to learn how to maintain the cut and employ any last minute grooming touches that may be necessary right before your dog's judging.

Interview professional dog handlers. Hire a professional handler if you do not wish to compete with your dog. Prepare to pay the handler and be sure to thoroughly interview her. If possible, watch the handler compete in a show. This will help you determine how well she interacts with and shows other dogs prior to hiring her to show your dog.
