How to Build a Kennel Roof

Most kennels do not come with a roof, but one can be added with a small amount of time and money. The roof will give your dog protection from rain, snow and heat, while keeping him in a safe area. A common kennel size is 8 by 10 feet. If your kennel is a different size, simply adjust the measurements. Remember, the roof needs to be 1 inch larger on all sides than the kennel itself to allow the roof frame to sit over the kennel.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Cut two 2-by-4s to 8 feet, 2 inches long. Mark as "A."

    • 2

Cut three 2-by-4s to 9 feet, 11 inches long. Mark two as "B" and one as "C."

    • 3

Cut a piece of sheet metal 8 feet, 4 inches by 10 feet, 4 inches. The ridges on the metal should lay perpendicular to "C."

    • 4

Mark a point on both "A" pieces at the 4-foot point.

    • 5

Lay "A" and "B" on edge to form a rectangle. "B" should be between the "A" pieces. Screw the pieces together.

    • 6

Screw "C" on edge at the points marked on both "A" pieces.

    • 7

Screw "D" on edge under the front "B." This will add extra height to the front and create a sloped roof for proper drainage.

    • 8

Center the metal roofing over the frame. It should hang over the frame by 1 inch on all sides. Screw the roof down to both "B" pieces and to "C."
