Instructions
Add an air cleaner that contains a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filter to your heating and air conditioning system. According to the Asthma &Allergy Foundation of America, the use of HEPA filters is a way to reduce exposure to pet allergens.
Remove carpeting. Consider installing a hard surface such as wood or tile. Carpet can collect and hold dog hair within the fibers, which is often difficult to remove. Hard surfaces make it easy to remove dog hair with a broom, dust mop or damp mop.
Refrain from allowing your dog to sleep in your bedroom. Approximately one-third of your life is spent in the bedroom. It is wise to eliminate your exposure to the dog during this time meant for rest.
Cover your bedroom vents with a loosely woven material such as cheesecloth to help filter out any pet particulates coming through the central heating and air conditioning system.
Vacuum floors at least twice a week, wearing a mask if this chore affects your allergies. Investigate vacuum cleaners that are meant specifically for pet hair. These vacuums have advanced suction power and special pet hair removal attachments. Many also feature HEPA filters.
Wipe down all hard surfaces, such as furniture and counter tops, on a daily basis. Using an anti-static spray on these surfaces can help to reduce the accumulation of pet dander and dust.
Bathe your dog regularly to help remove the dander and saliva from his skin and hair. If this task irritates your allergies, consider enlisting the help of others in your household or having it professionally done.
Consult your family physician about medications, either over-the-counter, or prescribed, which may help alleviate your symptoms.
