Make an appointment with a veterinarian as soon as you bring your Chihuahua puppy home. Chihuahuas are generally healthy dogs but are vulnerable to some disorders such as luxating patella, collapsing trachea, heart conditions, dental disease and hypoglycemia. Establishing a relationship with your vet while your puppy is healthy will make dealing with any future health issues less stressful for you and your dog.
See the resources section of this article for information about choosing the right veterinarian for your Chihuahua.
Keep your Chihuahua puppy warm. Chihuahuas are easily chilled and may need to wear coats or sweaters even when they are inside if you tend to keep your house cool.
Feed your Chihuahua puppy a high-quality, tiny-sized kibble and keep small portions of it available to him at all times. Chihuahuas burn energy quickly and may suffer from low blood sugar if forced to wait long periods between meals.
Provide fresh water for your puppy and make sure he is drinking it. Chihuahuas are more prone than many other breeds to developing kidney stones. Regular hydration is an important factor in maintaining kidney health. If there are any ongoing changes in your puppy's drinking habits, consult your veterinarian.
Exercise your Chihuahua regularly. Even though she may be a small dog she will benefit from daily walks. Walking and other forms of moderate exercise, such as chasing after toys and balls, will help your Chihuahua burn off excess energy and be a calmer dog.
Socialize your puppy by allowing him to meet a variety of people and other dogs under safe circumstances. Chihuahuas are loving dogs that can sometimes become overly attached to one person. Making sure your Chihuahua has relationships with other people and animals will make him a more confident and friendlier dog.
How to Take Care of a 6-Month-Old Chihuahua

It is also the smallest dog breed and boasts one of the longest life spans--sometimes in excess of 15 years. A Chihuahua puppy is generally no more difficult to take care of that any other type of puppy; however, there are some special considerations that you should be aware of if you have been hypnotized by the charming Chihuahua.
