Socialization
-
Puppies learn how to interact or socialize with people and other dogs when young. If they are isolated from other dogs or people, they will not know how to behave or read another dog's body language, according to "KISS Guide to Raising a Puppy."
Breeds
-
Some breeds are more aggressive than others, particularly to other dogs. These breeds include the Chow, Akita and Airedale terrier. They can be trained to be still around other dogs.
Territory
-
Dogs may consider their walkers as part of their pack and therefore anything that comes close is seen by the dog as trying to attack the pack, according to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
Fear
-
The HSUS also notes that dogs have long memories. If they were attacked just once by a certain kind of dog or person, they will act aggressive to anyone resembling their attackers.
When All Else Fails
-
If a dog owner suspects a dog may become aggressive when walked, the dog should always wear a muzzle when being walked. This will prevent any bites.

Why Dogs Are Aggressive When They Are Walked
Dogs show aggression when being walked, usually to other dogs, because they do not know how to act otherwise. The leading theory is that they are trying to guard the people walking them from others.
