The Best Way to Sell Dogs

People are particular about the breed and quality of dog when choosing their new best friend. Selling dogs can be challenging but, with the right approach, you should be able to find good homes for your dogs. Networking with other breeders and dog clubs is important to find responsible, passionate dog owners.
  1. Online

    • There are many dog sites online you can use to list the dogs you have for sale. Use a search engine to search for a classified site to sell your dogs. This can be more beneficial than just posting an ad in your local paper because you will reach a larger clientele. People from all over the country can see the ad for your dogs. Having a posting online also can be beneficial because you can include a picture of the dogs you have available.

    Newspaper Classified Ads

    • Many people still look in the classified ads to find a dog. Make sure to list your dog in a local paper. You also can take out an ad in papers of cities close to yours. People are willing to drive to another city to get a dog if they have to.

    Networking

    • If you are selling a specific breed, make sure to contact local clubs for the breed you are selling. Get to know the leaders of the club and its members. They may want another dog soon, and will know other people looking for that type of dog. Attending dog shows and getting to know owners of the dogs also is beneficial. Creating a network with people interested in a specific breed is the best way to get referrals to new owners who are passionate about the breed you are selling. Create a database with e-mail address of anyone who may be interested in a new dog. When you have dogs to sell, send out an e-mail with pictures and the prices of the dogs. Ask your network to forward the information to anyone who may be interested in purchasing a new dog.

    Pet Stores

    • Contact local pet stores about purchasing your dogs. Most pet stores only sell purebred dogs, so you will need to prove your dogs are purebred. You will need to show the dogs' lineage and paperwork from the female and male dog that were bred. You will not make as much money selling a dog through pet stores, generally about half the price. Although you will be making less money, it may be easier to sell more dogs to a pet store and you will not have the responsibility of caring for the dogs and marketing the sale. Make sure you only sell dogs to a reputable pet store.
