How to Rid the Black Flies from Around a Dog Pen

Flies are particularly annoying to dogs especially because they transmit diseases and bite tender portions of the ears (called "fly strikes") that can become crusted over with dried blood. When untreated, flies can actually remove the tips of your dog's ear in severe cases. If your dog is suffering from the effects of black flies in his pen, you need to take steps to get rid of the flies.

Things You'll Need

  • Poop scoops and bags
  • Sweet PDZ or other odor neutralizer
  • Fly traps
  • Fly strips
  • Topical systemic flea spot-on such as BioSpot or a anti-fly roll-on such as Flys-Off

Instructions

    • 1

Clean up all dog feces in the kennel on at least a daily basis. Bag all feces and throw them away. Dog feces attract flies.

    • 2

Sprinkle Sweet PDZ or other odor neutralizer over urine stains when the dog is not in the pen. This will help absorb the urine and keep the run sweet smelling.

    • 3

Install bottled fly traps around the kennel. These traps can be purchased at any hardware or feed store. They allow flies to come in but not fly out.

    • 4

Tape sticky fly strips around the pen, keeping them out of reach of your dog.

    • 5

Drop a single drop of BioSpot on each of your dog's ears or use Flys-Off (available at some feed stores). Both of these will keep the flies away from your dog's ears.
