How to Make a Ramp for a Pet Cage

Creating a ramp for an older or injured pet to get into its cage is a simple but important project. Ramps save both you and your pet the time it would take to help lift or carry it to its cage, and allow your pet to retain some freedom of movement in getting inand out of its cage.
A ramp can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make it, but the most basic ramps are also often the most effective and easy to use. Once you have built your ramp, the next step is training your pet to use it.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from your pet's cage to the ground. Use a sheet of plywood that creates a gentle slope from the ground to the cage so that your pet does not struggle in walking up the ramp.

    • 2

Use plywood that is 1/4 inch thick, or thicker if you have a heavy pet.

    • 3

Measure a piece of durable outdoor carpet to fit your plywood. Attach it with tacks. Check all of the tacks and make sure the heads are flush with the carpet so that your pet doesn't catch its feet on them.

    • 4

Nail several wooden lathes to your plywood using 1-inch nails. Check to be sure the heads are flush with the lathes. Attach one lathe every 4 to 12 inches, depending on the size of your pet and how long the ramp is. The lathes create a solid foothold for your pet to use.
