How to Build a Dog Lot

A dog lot, or dog run, is a fenced area for dog exercise. Dog lots can be designed for public or private use. Dog lots provide a secure, confined area designed to encourage dog recreation. Dog lots help protect lawns, gardens and other outdoor areas from the wear and tear of dog running and play. No matter how large or small a dog lot is, it should include basic components. Dog lots should be surrounded by a fence or wall, have areas of both sun and shade, be well-drained, provide shelter and include a water source.

Instructions

  1. Building a Dog Lot

    • 1

Measure and stake the area that will be dedicated to the dog lot. The dog lot can be any shape. Size is limited only by the space available. A space of at least 75 square feet is suggested for a large dog, like a Labrador or Husky.

    • 2

Install a fence or wall on all sides of the dog lot. Fencing can be chain link, vinyl-coated, cedar panels or wrought iron; masonry or stone walls are secure and attractive. The fence or wall should be contiguous, with no gaps and high enough to prevent jumping. A 6-foot fence is virtually escape proof. The fence should be as close to the ground as practical to prevent squeezing under. Install a gate with a strong latch and locking mechanism.

    • 3

Prepare the ground. Level and grade the ground to provide maximum drainage and to prevent water pooling and "mud holes." A combination of grass and paving is ideal. Avoid gravel and other surface materials that dogs might ingest. Dogs that dig will appreciate a "sandbox" area, located away from the fence to prevent tunneling.

    • 4

Landscape the dog lot. Trees and shrubs provide natural shade. Make certain there is no poisonous foliage in the dog lot, like poison ivy, but also English ivy and many flowering plants.

    • 5

Add shelter from sun, cold and rain. Build a dog house or purchase a commercial dog house that is well ventilated and easy to clean. A bench and overhead awning add comfort and make the dog lot inviting for human companions.

    • 6

Provide access to water for maintenance and cleaning of the dog lot and to easily refill clean drinking water for your dog. Most dogs also appreciate a shallow "doggy" pool for heat relief.
