India Pet Travel Regulations

Traveling overseas with a pet can be a nerve-racking experience, but as long as you comply with the airline and country's regulations you will be able to enter the country with your pet. In India the regulations are much like any other country.
  1. Health

    • Only pets in good health can enter India from foreign countries. You must have the proper paperwork (health certificate) from your veterinarian stating the pet is in good health.

    International

    • If you are entering India from a country that is not your homeland you must have a health certificate valid for that country as well as India.

    Carry On

    • Pets that fit in carriers small enough to sit under a plane seat are allowed on the plane as a carry-on. Check with the airline about size restrictions for carry-on carriers.

    Large Pets

    • Large pets must be checked into the baggage area to be put in the cargo area. Keep in mind that these pets must be in APHIS-compliant crates. APHIS is the Animal and Plant Inspection Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    Temperature

    • Watch the temperature before boarding the plane. If it is higher than 84 degrees Fahrenheit or less than 45 degrees, the pet will not be allowed to travel in the cargo area.
