Have your dog tested for allergies. In most cases, allergies are what is causing your dog to scratch itself so much. Your local vet can run a number of tests to determine if your dog is suffering from allergies. Seasonal as well as food allergies are just as common in dogs as they are in humans.
Shampoo your dog for mites (manges)or fleas. Mites can be painful source of itching and scratching. Some dogs will bite themselves bloody trying to battle these pests. Bath your dog regularly with a flea and mite shampoo recommended by your vet. This is especially important during the summer months when flea's and mites are at their worst.
Install a flea collar on your dog. This will prevent them from biting and drawing blood on the bodies. Instead, they will have to resort to less harmful ways of scratching such as rubbing and rolling.
