How to Kill Fleas on Wood Floors

Dogs and cats often have fleas. Fleas are small, wingless insects that pierce your pet's skin and suck out blood. They are not dangerous, but they do cause a lot of itching. If you do not get rid of the fleas, they will begin to bite the people in your family. One place fleas like to hide is in the cracks of wood floors. You need to pay special attention to this area when you are ready to exterminate.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the rooms in your home that have wood flooring of any furniture. This is because fleas like to live in dark places in between the cracks of your flooring. Underneath of a couch or foot stool would be ideal. Also, you don't want your furniture to be in the way when you use your flea killer.

    • 2

Vacuum the entire floor. Make sure you use the hose attachment to go up and down the cracks and along the baseboards. This will get rid of a large majority of the fleas.

    • 3

Remove the vacuum cleaner bag and tie it up inside of a trash bag. Immediately place it in an outside trash can with a lid. If you leave the bag in the vacuum, the fleas may be able to find their way back out.

    • 4

Sprinkle a flea powder that contains an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) all over the wood floors. Make sure you use a broom to get the powder into the cracks of the floor. The IGR will make sure that fleas in the early stages of their life cycle never survive to adulthood.

    • 5

Wait 24 hours before vacuuming up the flea powder. Make sure you use the hose attachment again so that you can get in between the crack of the wood floor. Throw away the vacuum cleaner bag just as you did before.

    • 6

Mop your floors before replacing your furniture.
