Restrict the dog to an enclosed area. If the dog is being left outside all day long, perhaps consider building or purchasing a dog pen. Be sure the pen is long and wide enough for the dog to move around and get plenty of exercise while the owner is gone. Also make sure the pen offers shelter for cold and wet weather.
Pick up toys, garden tools and everything else the dog may chew on. Buy a small shed to store supplies and other objects to prevent the dog from finding the objects and eventually chewing on them. If the dog is chewing on old branches or twigs, rake the yard and remove the debris immediately.
Take a trip to the veterinarian regarding the dog's chewing. The dog may be chewing out of separation anxiety, or even from fear of thunderstorms. Sometimes medications are given to help dogs adjust to stressful situations. Dogs can easily become anxious and the only way they may know to release that stress is to chew on everything in sight.
Bring the dog inside if the owner is gone for an extended period of time. The dog may be happier and more content being inside rather than roaming around outside where it may feel lonely and even get depressed. Consider using a crate or blocking the dog off in the kitchen until it is fully house broken.
Offer many toys for the dog to chew on. Instead of chewing on everything else, the dog may venture to a toy that it finds interesting. Be sure only toys are given that can't easily be shredded or torn apart, which may be harmful if swallowed.
Hire a dog trainer. A trainer may be able to break the dog from chewing on everything outside. Treats can be given for positive behavior. Staying consistent with firm commands may help condition the dog to find something else to keep it busy, rather than finding an object to chew on.
How to Prevent a Dog From Chewing Everything Outside
Dogs want to put anything and everything in their mouths. It is only natural for them to chew on things, whether it is an old shoe, a doggie toy or even a garden hose lying around outside. For dog owners who leave the dog outside for extended periods of time, the chewing may become a nuisance after awhile. There are a few strategies that can be used that may help prevent a dog from chewing on everything outside.
