What Causes Dark Elbows?

At times, dark discoloration appears on a dog's elbows and, occasionally, in other places on the dog's body such as the chest or hocks. For the most part, these dark areas are benign and easy to treat.

  1. Causes

    • One common cause of dark elbows is callusing, which appears on the elbows, pelvis, hocks and other bony areas on a dog's body because of regular and prolonged contact with hard or rough surfaces. Over time, the skin at the elbows compresses, and might become rough and discolored.

    Prone to Dark Elbows

    • According to veterinarians Peter Ihrke, Emily Walder and Verena Affolter, large and giant breeds are "at greater risk" of callusing. Debilitated dogs or those with disabilities might also be prone to dark elbows.

    Prevention

    • Make certain your pet is at a weight normal for its breed or body type. Provide a pillow, blanket or washable hammock bed for your dog to sleep on.

    Treatment

    • Mild callusing can be treated with vitamin E cream or oil, or supplementing the dog's diet with dietary sources of vitamin E. Thickly callused skin might need to be trimmed before other treatments can begin.

    When to See the Vet

    • Never trim your dog's calluses on your own. If your dog's darkened skin feels hot to the touch or if it oozes fluids, you should bring your dog to a veterinarian for a diagnosis.
