How to Get a Wet Dog Smell Out of Furniture

Dogs are wonderful pets to own, but they can oftentimes leave a lingering odor on furniture that is quite unpleasant. A wet dog smell on furniture can make the entire room, and perhaps even the entire house, fill up with an unpleasant odor. This can be embarrassing when guests come over and bothersome to the pet owner as well. Getting rid of the wet dog smell in your furniture will keep your entire home smelling fresh.

Instructions

Wash any slipcovers you may have on your furniture. Some slipcovers require dry cleaning while others are machine-washable. Dry them on low-heat or hang them outside to dry.

    • 2

Spray the furniture with an odor neutralizer such as Febreeze. This is usually just a temporary solution that may just mask the smell rather than eliminate it.

    • 3

Lay dryer sheets in the cushions of couches or chairs. This will make the furniture smell fresh and clean.

    • 4

Sprinkle baking soda on your furniture. Allow it to work into the furniture by sitting overnight. Vacuum up the baking soda the next day and the odor will be gone.

    • 5

Use an enzymatic cleaner on the furniture. These usually come in a spray bottle and can be sprayed directly onto the fabric. Test a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric prior to spraying over the entire piece of furniture. You can buy specific enzymatic cleaners for pet odors, such as OdoBan, online, at home improvement stores, pet stores and some retail stores.

Clean the underside of chairs and couches. You may need to turn them upside down. Wash the hard surfaces of furniture with a mild detergent and water. Use an enzymatic cleaner on the rest.

Clean up your house. Your dog is more likely to have that wet dog smell if there are bacteria and germs in the home for your dog to pick up.
