Blotting the Area
-
If the area where your dog has urinated is still wet, try to blot the urine as dry as possible. Leaving it to dry out will promote the growth of bacteria that causes the smell. To blot it successfully, just place a number of paper towels over the wet area, then walk on the towels to soak up as much of the urine as you can. You might have to repeat this a few times until no more urine can be soaked up
Black Lights
-
Sometimes dog urine has already dried.. You can still find the dried urine on your carpet by using a black light. Under ultra violet light in a darkened room, the dog's urine is fluorescent. These black lights can normally be found at hardware stores and are fairly inexpensive.
Vinegar and Water
-
The next thing to do is to mix a half-and-half solution of white vinegar and water. Use a lot of this solution to reach deep carpet fibers. Work the solution into the carpet with a scrubbing brush, so it can get through the deeper carpet fibers. After doing this thoroughly, blot the area again using the paper towel method described earlier. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia in the dog urine.
Baking Soda
-
When the area has nearly dried, sprinkle some baking soda over it. Then mix half a cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. After donning a pair of rubber kitchen gloves, pour the mixture over the baking powder. Work the mixture into the carpet, first with your fingers and then with a scrubbing brush. If you do not have hydrogen peroxide, substitute it with a spray laundry stain remover. If the bottle says "Oxy" on the label, it most likely contains hydrogen peroxide.
Considerations
-
Never use products containing ammonia on the carpet to remove pet urine. Ammonia is a part of the urine, and your dog or puppy might urinate in the same area if it smells like ammonia. Many household cleaners contain ammonia, so be sure to read the label.
