Homemade Costumes for Dogs

Dogs are the most popular pet in the United States, with more than 73 million Americans owning pooches in 2008. Dogs have quickly become an extension of the American family, and most pet supply stores offer costumes to dress your dog up for the holidays. For your pet to be truly unique, however, make your own dog costume. With a lot of imagination and a little work, your dog will sport a memorable look for any occasion.

  1. '80s Glam

    • This homemade costume is perfect for Halloween or for including your pooch in an '80s-themed party. Cut the sleeves and neck off of an old, brightly colored sweatshirt. Cut the bottoms off brightly colored children's socks to use as leg warmers, and stick on a pair of bright plastic sunglasses to complete the look. Although these probably won't stay on your dog, you'll get plenty of classic pictures of your '80s pup.

    Western Hero

    • This cowboy costume is a spunky and easy look for your pup. Find a bandanna and tie it loosely around your dog's neck. Then find a child's-size cowboy hat (or adult size, depending on the dog) and place it on your dog's head. If your dog has ears that stick straight up, make roomy holes for the ears to poke through comfortably.

    Superdog

    • Many dogs think they're superheroes, and, hey, many are. Turn your dog into Superman by taking a child's-size blue shirt and cutting the sleeves to make it comfortable. Cut out an "S" using red felt, and glue it to the chest of the shirt. Then use the same red felt to create a cape and attach it to the back of the shirt.
