You may be able to remove pet urine from carpets and upholstery so your home can remain smelling fresh and clean, but it is not easy. Instructions

White vinegar is known for its odor-neutralizing properties.

Spray the area immediately with a commercially available pet odor spray. There are several on the market that have an odor neutralizer spray made specifically for companion animals. Once the area is saturated with the product, use paper towels to completely blot the area until it is fully dry. If this does not work, move on to step two.

Spray it down with your own household mixture of vinegar and water to further clean the area. Use one part vinegar to four parts water. Using this mixture will insure that all smells are lifted out of your soiled household fabrics and also prevents your dog from thinking the area is a marking (or repeat) post where he can regularly urinate.

Purchase a pet-odor eliminator such as Oxi Clean Versatile, Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution to remove stains and pet urine easily and safely from carpets. If steps one and two do not completely remove the urine smell from your carpet, you may have to resort to purchasing a commercially-prepared formula.

Spray the area with a strong air freshener, preferably one that is made to neutralize pet odors. Spray the air above the carpet, and the carpet itself with the air freshener several times over the course of 24 hours for best results.
