Essential Oils
-
Bathing your dog is one step in curing your dog of his stinky odor. By adding certain essential oils to an all natural shampoo you can neutralize the odors. Essential oils are very strong, so only add a drop or two of each to the bottle of shampoo. A combination of citronella, peppermint and lemon oil will not only make your dog smell better, but the oils will help keep fleas and other bugs away from him.
You can also use a combination of geranium, chamomile and lavender oils. This will also help your dog smell good and is great for relieving itchy skin caused by allergies.
Teeth Care
-
Sometimes, it is as simple as cleaning your pooch's teeth, as the foul odor may be a result of bad breath. Make a gentle toothpaste for your dog by mixing a paste of baking soda and water. Use a small toothbrush or your finger and brush her teeth. Be sure to get the gums and jowls as well. Give your dog some fresh water when you are finished. Doing this often will make your dog's breath much sweeter.
Keep the Ears Clean
-
It is possible your dog's odor is coming from a yeast build-up in his ears. A yeast infection in your dog's ears can cause a terrible smell. Make sure to keep the ears clean and dry. Dogs with long ears are especially prone to yeast infections. You can make a solution using items you probably already have at home. Mix equal portions of rubbing alcohol, white vinegar and water. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and thoroughly clean your dog's ears. Doing this often will help prevent future yeast infections and keep your dog's ears odor free.
If you are keeping the ears clean and the smell is not going away, be sure to take your dog to the vet. The odor could be a result of a more serious condition requiring antibiotics.
