Function
-
Weighted vests for dogs are designed to perform two functions. The first is to help build strength, endurance and muscle mass. Added weight intensifies the dog's workout during daily walks. The second function is to calm high-energy or aggressive dogs. Over-active dogs are easier to tire when wearing a weighted vest. A dog that is worn out after exercise is less likely to exhibit destructive or aggressive behavior.
Types
-
There are two main types of weighted vests for dogs. The first is designed with small zippered pockets. Small weights are placed in the pockets to increase the intensity of the workout. The weights are available in 1/2 lb. and 1 lb. sizes. Pocketed vests that do not include weights are also available for dogs. Water bottles or other supplies can be placed in the pockets to increase the weight. Both styles should carry the weight on the shoulders to avoid back strain.
Considerations
-
Consider having a veterinarian examine your dog before fitting him for a weighted dog vest. The vest should fit properly and be well lined with a comfortable padding. A heavy fabric and double stitching will increase durability. If hiking is part of your lifestyle, the pocketed vest may fit your needs. The dog can help carry his own supplies. You may prefer the vest fitted with pocket weights for neighborhood walks or treadmill use.
Benefits
-
Having a job is important to dogs and wearing a weighted vest while walking is a job. Giving a dog a job to do promotes mental stability and emotional satisfaction. The increased workout provided by carrying added weight helps tire out the dog. A tired dog is less interested in getting into mischief. Using the weighted dog vest will increase the amount of energy burned in a shorter time when you do not have a full hour to walk your dog. Dog walking increases bonding between pet and owner.
Warnings
-
Weighted vests should never be used for dogs that are less than 2 years old. Joint injuries can occur if too much weight is carried while dogs are growing and developing. Dogs should be mature and healthy before carrying any added weight. Cesar Millan recommends that healthy dogs can safely carry 10 percent to 20 percent of their body weight. Start training with an empty vest and gradually increase the weight as the dog becomes used to it. This will prevent muscle strain and injury to the joints.

Weighted Vests for Dogs
Dogs require long walks to build and maintain healthy muscles, need healthy outlets for excess energy, and must have jobs to be happy and well adjusted. Weighted vests for dogs can help you obtain each of these goals. Dog trainer and author of "Cesar's Way," Cesar Millan states "wearing a backpack almost always calms a dog down; it's like Prozac--only without the side-effects."
