How to Replace Batteries in Tracking Collars

Tracking collars for dogs are becoming more and more common all the time. Tracking collars can help locate lost or runaway dogs, and they are also indispensable when it comes to keeping track of the location of hunting dogs. While different brands and different models of dog tracking collars often use different batteries, replacing the batteries is surprisingly similar for all collars; if you can change the batteries in one, you can replace the batteries in all of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the collar from your dog's neck, and lay it out flat with the inside of the collar (the part that goes next to the dog's fur) up.

    • 2

Locate the battery compartment. There will be a plastic cover marking the location of the compartment. Note whether the compartment is held on by four tiny screws or whether there is a small slot on one edge of the top of the compartment.

    • 3

Unscrew the four screws with your Phillips-head screwdriver if the lid of the compartment is secured by screws.

    • 4

Insert the end of your slot screwdriver into the slot on the edge of the top of the compartment and twist the screwdriver slightly to unlock the mechanism and remove the lid if the lid is secured by a plastic snap mechanism.

    • 5

Note the number, size and configuration of the batteries. Your collar could have double or triple "A" batteries or it could have tiny button batteries. Make a quick diagram showing where the positive pole of each battery is located.

    • 6

Remove the batteries. It may be necessary with some button batteries to use the tip of your small slot screwdriver to carefully and gently pry the batteries out.

    • 7

Replace the old batteries with new batteries of the same size. Be careful to replace the batteries in the same configuration as the old batteries; that is, make certain that the positive pole of each battery is facing the same way as it was with the old batteries.

    • 8

Replace the lid of the battery compartment. Screw on the lid if it is equipped with screws and snap it back into place if it uses a plastic snap lock.

    • 9

Return the collar to your dog's neck.
