Instructions
Block off the pool and pool area with a sturdy fence or gate made of metal, wood, mesh or vinyl and keep it closed at all times. The fence or gate should be double the height of your dog.
Cover the pool with a pool cover. There are a variety of pool covers ranging from automatic ones that operate with either electric or hydraulic power to a simple, lightweight mesh or net. There are covers for both above-ground and in-ground swimming pools.
Place a baby gate in front of the back door leading to the pool for extra security. You can never be too safe, nor underestimate the power of a pooch. Where there's a will, there can often be a way.
Install a pool ramp or dock so that your dog can escape from the pool in an emergency. These vary in design, but most run under $100.
How to Keep a Dog From Falling in a Pool
Don't be fooled by the term "dog paddling." It just doesn't come naturally for all dogs, including certain breeds such as bulldogs, basset hounds and dachshunds. If you have a pool and a pooch -- especially a non-swimming pooch -- you'll want to do your best to keep him from accidentally falling in. Here are some precautions you can take -- as well as ways to save your pooch -- in case "dog forbid" it should happen.
