How to Get Pet Odors Out of Subflooring

Having pets means having pet odors. Whether you have a cat, a dog, a ferret or a bird, your house will absorb the odor. Sometimes, the smell can get into the subflooring. This is especially true with cats and dogs who have accidents. Some odors can never be eliminated from the subflooring and you may have to replace it. These steps, however, will help remove most of the smell.

  1. How to Get Pet Odors out of Subflooring

    • 1

Pull up the flooring--carpet, wood or tile--to get access to the subflooring.

    • 2

Clean the subfloor with a bleach-and-water mixture that is one part bleach to one part water.

    • 3

Use a clean, dry cloth to soak up any extra water that is still on the floor and let the subfloor dry.

    • 4

Once the subfloor is dry, apply a coat of Kilz, which is an odor remover. You may need to apply two coats if the smell persists.

    • 5

After the Kilz has dried, replace the flooring with the carpet, tile or wood.
