How to Seal a Subfloor From Pet Odor

Anyone who has pets knows how hard it is to get pet odors out of flooring. Some people rip up the carpet, while others refinish their wood floors, but nothing seems to get out the smell. Whether you bought a house that smells of pets, or your own animals have soiled the floors, you can seal in the odor with a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the carpet, wood flooring or tiles that cover the subfloor.

    • 2

Clean the subfloor with a bleach-and-water mixture--one part bleach to one part water. The bleach will kill any bacteria on the subflooring.

    • 3

Apply two coats of Kilz primer. The odor remover will seep into the flooring. Allow it to dry completely.

    • 4

Apply two coats of polyurethane, a protective coat that will seal in the odor. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.

    • 5

Resurface the floor with carpet, wood flooring or tiles.
