How to Make a Dog's Ears Stand Up

Most dogs are able to hear distinct noises from long distances. With their acute sense of hearing, dogs may respond to their owners' call by raising their ears. Some distinct noises that can get a dog to raise his ears include clapping your hands, whistling, ringing a bell and making sharp clicking sounds with your teeth. There are even mechanical devices designed to attract the attention of dogs, which emit high-pitched ringtones (undetectable by trained human ears) that will get your dog's ears to stand up. All of these techniques will easily train any dog to listen attentively to sharp tones and respond to his master's will.

Clap your hands three times, in sequence, until the dog responds by raising his ears. This will help alert the dog and guide him in recognizing a call.

    • 2

Whistle loudly (similarly to a kettle boiling with water) by pursing your lips, with the upper row of teeth against the bottom lip, to produce a sharp tone. The whistle will sound completely different than a clap. By raising its ears, your dog is trying to distinguish between the sounds.

Use an ultrasonic pet training device. These devices produce frequencies that cannot be detected by the human ear, and can be used to test and assist in training dogs, as they encourage attentive listening.

Suck your teeth repetitively. This will encourage your dog's ability to relate to you or a trainer. The rapid clicking sounds of your tongue against your teeth will increase your chances of getting your dog's ears to stand straight up and have him respond playfully to your signals.
