How to Make a Dog Cage with a Roof

Dog cages can be used if you need to keep your dog in one while you are at work or if you have a visitor that is allergic to dogs. They work especially well for puppies when they are potty training or going through a chewing phase. They can also be used for transporting dogs. Building a dog cage with a roof on your own is inexpensive and will last a long time.

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out the type of dog cage you need: a large or small one. This, of course, depends on the breed. If you are building a cage when your dog is a puppy, keep in mind the maximum size your dog will eventually grow in the future. The dog needs to be able to stand on all fours and move around comfortably in the cage.

Use steel to craft the cage floors, walls and ceiling. This will help protect against chewing, and it won't splinter like wood (which could possibly injure your dog). Obtain the steel in large sheets with holes that measure 1 by 1 inch. If you decide to buy the pieces separately and weld them, make sure the steel you obtain is clean and intact. You can buy them in four separate pieces (front, back and two sides, but you will have to buy all four corners) or two pieces (the front and back).

Use a soldering iron to weld all of these parts together or have a welder do it for you. Make sure you do this step very carefully and thoroughly, as it is very important to make sure all the edges of the metal line up to create a solid cage with a roof.

Add the metal baseboard then add the sheet of plywood on top.

    • 5

Make a door for the dog cage. Secure two hinges, with a lock, to the front piece of the cage. Be sure to make the door large enough for your dog to go through.

Place items in the dog cage that will make your dog,or puppy feel comfortable. This includes a dog bed, newspaper shreds, a food or water bowl and toys. Make sure to wipe it down and clean it regularly to maintain your dog's health.
