How to Make a Homemade Dog Wheelchair

Perhaps you have a beloved pet, but the pet can't walk anymore and needs help. Purchasing a ready-made dog wheelchair is quite expensive, but you can make your own for as little as $15. PVC pipe is an excellent idea for pet wheelchairs, as it is lightweight and sturdy. With PVC pipe, you can also make the wheelchair to fit the size of your pet simply by increasing the dimensions of the wheelchair.

Things You'll Need

  • All supplies will depend on the size of your pet
  • For a small wheelchair use:
  • 3/4-inch inch PVC pipe

  • Handsaw or ratcheting cutter

Measure the height of your dog's legs to determine how high you will need to have the wheelchair. The dog needs to be able to use the legs that work to pull himself along. Also measure the length you will need.

    • 2

Cut four PVC pieces to the correct height and four PVC pieces to the correct length with the saw or cutter. Also cut two crosspieces for the width at the front and back of the dog wheelchair.

    • 3

Measure the material. Make sure there is enough material to fold over all four sides and sew each side together with a sewing machine, making a hole through which the PVC pipe goes through.

    • 4

Slide the side bars and the crosspieces into the material openings. Join all the pieces together with the glue, using the elbows for the frame and the T's for the crosspieces. View the accompanying photo for reference.

Add the wheels to the bottom legs of the wheelchair and tighten. Put the pet in.
