Dangerous Medications for Dogs

Dogs are very sensitive to human medications. Because of this, all such medications should be kept well out of the way of areas a dog can reach. A locked medicine cabinet is one of the best places to keep them. Should your dog ingest any medications, regardless of the amount, contacting a veterinarian immediately is important to ensure the dog's survival.
  1. Cancer-Treatment Medications

    • These medications, including Fluorouracil, are dangerous to dogs. Vomiting, diarrhea and rapid death are possible, even when only a small amount is ingested.

    Pseudoephedrine

    • Pseudoephedrine is one of the ingredients in cold medicines. This medication can cause the dog's heart rate to increase, and can cause seizures.

    Acetaminophen

    • A common pain reliever for humans, this drug causes liver and red-blood-cell damage in dogs.

    NSAIDs

    • Dogs are very sensitive to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also called NSAIDs. Internal ulcers and kidney damage are two of the dangers that accompany these drugs.

    ADHD Medications

    • ADHD medications cause extreme hyperactivity in dogs. They raise the animal's blood pressure and can overwork the heart.
