How to Make a Dog House Heater

A dog house can be made quite comfortable during the winter months by installing a simple DIY heating system using readily available materials from the local home supply store. While there are many options for heating a dog house, this simple approach provides a safe environment free of combustible fuels, flame and fumes that may endanger the dog.
This basic warming system may be assembled and put in use in 20 minutes with little or no experience and will provide a comfortable home for your dog on the coldest of winter nights.

  • Two 75-watt flood lamps Two flood lamp holders 50 foot-long extension cord with two access plug-in sockets 24-hour timer Heavy plastic sheeting 18 inches wide and 18 inches long Four one-inch wood screws Flat-head screwdriver Electric drill with 1-1/2 inch bit

      Using two 1-inch wood screws, attach each base of the flood lamp holders to the rear wall, one on each side of the dog house at a point 16 inches above the floor.

      Using the electric drill and 1-1/2 inch bit, drill two access holes in the floor of the dog house just below the position of the flood light base and feed power cord from the flood light base through these openings.

      Insert 75-watt flood light bulbs into each sock on the mounted bases and tilt at an angle to concentrate beam on the center of the dog's bedding.

      Plug the two power cords from the flood light bases into the 50-foot extension cord.

      Set the 24-hour timer to reflect the the number of hours you want to heat the doghouse and plug timer into an AC power outlet.
      Plug 50-foot extension cord into the timer.

      Add a dark-colored blanket on the floor of the dog house to absorb the heat from the lights.

      Staple 18-inch heavy plastic sheeting on the top side of the dog house door, leaving the bottom of the sheet unattached to give the dog access. Plastic sheet serves as a wind break and helps hold in the heat from the flood lamps.
