How to Remove Dog Hair From Car Seats

It's happened to every animal lover whose dog has a coat that sheds: You arrive at work and get out of the car, only to find your clothing covered with dog hair. You were spotless when you left for work, so the only possible answer can be that you picked it up from your car seat.

Most pet owners love their dogs too much to ban them from at least occasionally riding in the car. Fortunately, it's not difficult or expensive to remove dog hair from your car seats. Make the effort to discourage excessive shedding on your dog's part by simply brushing and combing his fur as frequently as possible--especially in the fall, when shedding becomes very heavy. Make sure you use the grooming tools most suitable to your dog's coat type. You'll both enjoy this activity, which will help keep the hair level on your car seats under control.

Instructions

    • 1

Smooth over the dog hair on your car seats quickly with a clothes-dryer sheet. This will render the hair softer and easier to pick up.

    • 2

Remove as much of the excess dog hair as you can with a stiff-bristled brush. Use quick, light strokes, making sure the brush isn't so rigid that it will harm the upholstery of your car. This will take the heaviest hair and fur out of your way--but some of the finer hairs may remain.

    • 3

Wrap a strip of wide duct tape or sticky packing tape loosely around the palm of your hand, inside-out, forming a complete band. Press the sticky side against the hair on the seat, which will then adhere to the tape. When the section of tape you're using clogs with hair, move the circle of tape so a clean, sticky surface rests in your palm. Keep patting and dabbing away the hair until the strip of tape is full. Replace it and continue until you've removed all the hair from your seats.

Cover your car seats with a commercially made dog seat cover, or even old towels or sheets. Simply shake them out on a regular basis.

Protect your washing machine and dryer from excess hair buildup by shaking out your clothes or brushing away the hair prior to laundering. Clean the lint filter in your dryer after each load of laundry. Every other week, add a cup of white vinegar to a regular wash cycle containing no clothing or detergent.
