  1. How to Make a Pet Kennel

    • 1

Measure the area on which you will put the concrete pad and kennel. Sizes will vary. Make sure you have enough room for a doghouse if you plan to put one inside.

    • 2

Dig out the length and width for the concrete pad. The depth needs to be more than half of the thickness that you want the pad to be. The other half will stick up above the ground level. Make room to pour gravel on top of the soil appropriate for drainage.

    • 3

Dig post-holes with your diggers. You will need one on each corner, approximately 6 inches from the sides, and the hole should be deep enough to surpass the freezing point in the ground. You will also need a hole on the back and two for the door or gateposts to go into.

    • 4

Make corner forms for the concrete with your wood and nails, aligning the perimeter with your mason’s line. Corners will need to be nailed together. Pour some gravel on top of the soil and also a bit into the holes after you put the posts in the hole (no concrete yet).

    • 5

Check with your local home improvement center to calculate the amount of concrete necessary. Follow the mixing directions for the concrete. Set posts in concrete first. This will not affect your slab because you are pouring it into the holes. Make sure the posts are straight and even. Let this dry. Pour your concrete slab around the posts. Make sure it is smooth. Once this is dry, remove your forms. Put your chain-link fence together around these posts.
