How to Handle a Multiple Dog Family

Many people own more than one dog, but having a multiple-dog household can seen intimidating and scary at times. Animals can have different personalities, likes and dislikes, and it can cause friction if your pets are not accustomed to each other. Before you bring a new dog into your home to join the one you already have, be aware of a few things that can make the transition easier. If you already have multiple dogs, there are still a few key elements to make note of.

Make sure you learn about each dog’s temperament and traits. Once you have more than one dog in your house, you will have a pack, and your dogs will now have a leader. Be sure to match opposite traits. You don’t want to bring a hyperactive dog into a house that already has one. If you have an aggressive dog, you don’t want another aggressive dog.

If you already have more than one canine, spread out your attention to include all dogs. Playing favorites can cause aggression and resentment in the dog who receives less attention. Be sure to spend time with all of your dogs and give them equal playtime.

Have toys and feeding dishes for each individual dog. You wouldn’t buy your human children toys and make them share every single one, nor should you do it for your dogs. It’s also a bad idea to bring home a single new toy, since you will have to give it to one dog, leaving the other dog out. Having separate feeding dishes keeps aggression to a minimum during feeding time. If you do have a problem with fighting, feed your dogs in separate areas of the house.

Make time for your dogs. One dog can be a handful, but two or more just adds to the chaos. Make sure that you have the time and patience to handle the activities and needs of a multi-dog household. Each dog will need individual attention, so plan accordingly.

Walk your dogs together, if possible, to create an important bond between them. Walking your dog lets them explore in a safe environment, and also allows you to take charge of their behavior. If you have someone who can help out, take your dogs out together on a walk. This not only lets them be around each other, it also tires them out and creates a more peaceful home after you’re done.
