How to Overcome a Fear of Dogs

The fear of dogs, cynophobia, is so extreme in some people that it can cause anxiety attacks. You could experience a rapid heartbeat or even develop vertigo as a result of an encounter with a dog. When cases are this extreme, it may be necessary to undergo therapy to overcome this fear. If you have a milder case of cynophobia, however, there are some steps you can take to overcome it.

Instructions

    • 1

Accept that you have a fear.

    • 2

Visit a location where you can view dogs from a distance. Try sitting on a bench in a park where dogs are commonly walked or played with. You can also usually see dogs from the safety of your car in the parking lot at a pet supply store or dog park.

    • 3

Meet an older dog. Unlike younger dogs and puppies, older dogs are typically more relaxed and less excitable. You do not have to touch the dog; just allow yourself to get as close to it as you feel comfortable with.

    • 4

Seek out dogs wearing outfits. It is hard to be intimidated by a dog wearing a silly costume. Allow the dog to come near and smell you, even if you are not yet comfortable enough to pet it.

    • 5

Touch a dog on its side. Have the owner hold the dog in a position where its face is not near you. Pet the dog on its back and sides. Continue this process weekly until you are comfortable with petting the dog while it is facing you and you no longer feel the fear.
