How to Tell if a Dog is Depressed

Like people, dogs can fall victims to depression. Also like us, the causes can be quite similar. A fellow pet dying, a child growing up and moving out, things of this nature can have quite noticeable effects on your dog. By following these steps, you can tell if your dog may be suffering from depression.

Instructions

    • 1

Check for lethargy. A common sign of depression in dogs is an abnormal state of laziness. You’ll tend to notice it’s a bit sluggish and indifferent. It can usually be accompanied by a lot of laying about and moping. If your dog is normally active and now refuses to play, it could be a tell tale sign of depression.

    • 2

Make sure your dog is eating properly. This can be the hardest hitting symptom of depression. When a dog is depressed, it sometimes will refuse to eat or even drink, leading to drastic losses in weight.

    • 3

Examine your dog’s sleeping habits. Sleeping for hours on end, only to wake up to urinate and continue sleeping is a common sign of depression.

    • 4

Rule out all possible physical causes. Go to your veterinarian and make sure your dog’s abnormal behavior isn’t related to anything physical, such as a soreness or disease.

    • 5

Get your dog help. If your dog is depressed, it may be only temporary. Often a change of residence or the loss of a family member may cause temporary depression in pets. If the problem seems chronic, visit your vet or a pet psychologist to discuss methods of treatment, including behavioral approaches and medication.
