Instructions

  1. Stoop to their level -- literally!

    • 1

Proceed with caution. When approaching a dog for the first time, the dog will be suspicious of you because you are a stranger. Walk slowly toward them, but do not make eye contact.

    • 2

Slowly crouch lower as you approach. You aim to be on their level, to show you are not dominant, which can make the dog wary and fearful of you.

    • 3

Slowly extend your hand to the dog as you lower youself.. You may even reach face level if you feel comfortable and if you feel the dog is comfortable as well.

    • 4

Let the dog sniff your hand. This is how dogs evaluate other creatures--primarily by their smell. If you have touched another dog prior to this encounter, the new dog will be able to tell and may find it offensive.

    • 5

Gently stroke the dog on his head if he allows it.

    • 6

Let your fingers slowly stroke the dog's ears, slowly massaging the tips. This usually calms dogs down.

Making a friend. If you are both comfortable, the dog will now begin to trust you. Congratulations.
