Instructions
Choose a chain link or wooden fence for the longest lasting and most humane type of dog fence. These can be difficult to install and expensive, but they are the most reliable method to keep your dog safely inside the yard.
Make sure there are no gaps in the fence if you choose to install a wooden or chain link fence. Small dogs can easily escape from even the smallest of gaps.
Install an invisible fence is you are unable to put up traditional fencing. Invisible fencing consists of a cable installed in the ground around the perimeter of your yard. The location of the invisible fence is marked with flags, and the cable is attached to a transmitter that sends out a signal to a collar around your dog's neck. Your dog receives an electric shock if it moves too close to the boundary.
Use wireless fencing as an alternative to invisible fencing. Wireless fencing works basically the same way, but there is no cable to install. You use the transmitter to send out a signal that keeps your dog within a set range.
How to Select the Right Dog Fence
When you need to choose a fence for your dog, consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type, and the requirements of your yard. You should choose a dog fence that fits your budget, works with the size of your yard and is safe for your pet.
