Instructions
Decide where to install the door. This is an easy decision if you only have one door that provides access to your backyard. However, you may also consider adding a dog door to the garage.
Select the dog door of your choice from a hardware store or home improvement store. Make sure it's large enough for your pet. Generally, installation kits will include the door, hinges, frames, a cutting template and instructions.
Tape the template to your door and carefully trace the outline. Be sure to mark any spots where you'll need to drill holes or attach hinges.
Use a drill to make a starter hole, and then use a jigsaw to cut the door out.
Put the inside frame in place. It's helpful to have another person hold the outside frame as you secure both of the frames with nuts and bolts.
Test the dog door by enticing your pet with his favorite treat. The flap should move freely and stay in a closed position when not in use.
