Moral diplomacy is a term introduced by former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Michael Kozak on August 9, 2020 for diplomacy based on universal morality as opposed to realism. Kozak was responding to critics arguing that the "Trump administration is abandoning all diplomatic principles". Kozak explained the moral diplomacy as following:
"[I]t places greater focus on a country's human rights practices when shaping U.S. foreign policy [...] If an actor is behaving immorally -- particularly if a government -- that actor should be met with international moral reproach and international consequences"
