Organism 2: Feraflora
Habitat: Bioluminescent rainforest; in a world similar to Earth, but slightly more magical
Mutualistic relationship: Bioluminescent defense
Luminoth is a glowing, flying beetle and Feraflora is a luminescent plant that thrives in dark, humid rainforest. The glowing defense mutualism between Luminoth and Feraflora is a magical adaptation that helps both of these organisms survive in the Bioluminescent Rainforest.
During its larval stage, Luminoth is defenseless and vulnerable to the many predators in the rainforest. To mitigate this, Luminoth larvae release a special luminescent chemical in the air. Feraflora absorbs this substance and the glowing substance is stored in the chloroplasts of the plants for later use. In return for providing sustenance, the glowing effect in Feraflora wards off potential danger approaching Luminoth larvae.
Once the Luminoth reaches its adult stage, the beetle returns the favor by defending the now fully-grown Feraflora from herbivores and other plants that may compete with it for nutrients. Luminoth produces special pheromones to attract nearby predators to anything trying to harm the plant. If a predator does make it to the plant before Luminoth arrives to defend it, Feraflora sprays a potent nectar on the predator which has a similar effect as capsaicin spray causing the predator to immediately retreat.
