What is the difference between a rough collie and collie?

The Rough Collie and the Collie are often used interchangeably, however, there is actually a difference between the two. In Britain, 'Rough Collie' is a term used specifically to describe the long-haired variety of the Collie breed, while the term 'Collie' is used as a general term to refer to all varieties of the breed.

The Rough Collie is one of several landraces of Collie that exist in Scotland, and is the most well-known of the Collie varieties. It features a long, dense coat of fur that is typically sable, tricolour, blue merle, or white with a sable mask, and is the type most often seen in film and television.

The Collie, on the other hand, refers to the entirety of the Collie breed, which includes the Rough Collie, the Smooth Collie, and the Border Collie. Each variety of Collie shares certain physical and temperamental characteristics, such as an intelligent and loyal nature, and a moderate energy level.
