Why are giant pandas called giant?

The giant panda was named for its large size in comparison to the rest of the bear family. It is the largest of the living bears, measuring 4.5 to 6.4 feet (1.4 to 1.9 meters) in length and weighing 220 to 300 pounds (100 to 136 kilograms).

In addition to its size, the giant panda is also notable for its black and white markings, its unique diet of bamboo, and its status as a vulnerable species.
