Instructions
Be aware that ferrets are sneaky and can escape very easily. Build a cage strong enough to hold them.
Design or purchase a crate or cage large enough for your ferret to run and play. Ferrets have a lot energy and require extra space. Multi-level ferret homes are ideal, because they offer room to run, play and relax. The crate needs to be 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 3 feet high to home one ferret.
Choose a metal or plywood cage over a plastic cage. Metal or plywood cages are better suited to home ferrets because the ferret will not be able to chew through the wood or wire. To make the flooring of the cage more comfortable for the ferret, lay down some vinyl or soft bedding.
Purchase good quality bedding. On average, ferrets sleep 15 to 20 hours a day, so they require a comfortable place to sleep. Sleeping sacks and hammocks are excellent choices because they are soft and warm.
Provide fresh water and food daily. Ferrets require a diet high in protein. Most pet stores sell food designed specifically for ferrets and should be easily available. While ferrets do not require snacks, they can be a helpful aide when training.
Provide toys to entertain your ferret. Bored ferrets are curious and this may lead to them trying to escape. In order to prevent this from happening, provide your ferret with several toy options. Pet stores often have tubes designed for ferret homes. If you can't find toys especially for ferrets, cat toys are just as enjoyable and safe.
How to Make a Ferret Home
Bringing home a pet ferret can be an exciting time. Ferrets are loving creatures, but they are also quite mischievous, which is why it is important to make a safe, escape-proof home for your ferret.
