How to Hand Feed a Syrian Hamster

Syrian hamsters are popular indoor pets because of their adorable appearance and their friendly, playful nature. Nicknamed the "teddy bear" hamster, this fuzzy little animal may put up a fight if not hand-fed under the right conditions. Startled Syrian hamsters or those that have not been tamed may literally bite the hand that feeds them. To ensure that your Syrian hamster nibbles its food and not your digits, promote a calming, comfortable feeding ritual.

Instructions

    • 1

Wake your hamster. Syrian hamsters often sleep during the day because of their nocturnal nature. These animals reflexively bite when startled awake because of a defense mechanism. Never wake a hamster with your hand. Gently tap the cage or speak to the hamster to wake it.

Get down. Engage your hamster at its level. Syrian hamsters feel intimidated when approached from above, so do not reach down into the cage. Look eye to eye with the hamster to alleviate fear.

    • 3

Wash your hands. Fingers that smell like your lunch may be treated like lunch.

    • 4

Reach out to your hamster. Extend your hand toward your hamster slowly. Gently bring your fingers close to your hamster's face. Allow the Syrian hamster to smell your fingers before feeding. Hamsters have bad eyesight, so they operate largely by sense of smell. Allowing your hamster to smell your fingers lets it know you are a familiar friend.

Place a treat or a small amount of food in the palm of your hand. Slowly reach your hand toward your hamster. Allow your hamster to approach your palm to retrieve the food.
