How to Use Humus Bricks for Tortoises

The sweet smell of humus, or rich soil, is not only the perfect addition to a healthy garden, but also creates a good living environment for pet tortoises. As with all soil, humus is comprised of a variety of organic products, broken down over time, into a nutrient-rich mixture. Humus, however, is different from other forms of soil, for it is completely broken down, creating a stable, dark colored mixture for tortoises to live on. It also provides a home for small creatures the turtles feast on.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large bucket with water, leaving only enough room left to place one humus brick.

    • 2

Insert the humus brick. Allow it to absorb the water over one to two hours, flipping it to give it even absorption. Add more water if needed, as the brick absorbs about 10 times its original size.

    • 3

Place the brick in the enclosure, spreading it evenly over the ground. It should easily crumble at this point, as it is fully rehydrated.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with more humus bricks, until the entire enclosure is covered by 1 to 2 inches of rehydrated humus.

    • 5

Add small creatures, such as beetles and earthworms, to the enclosure. They will reside in the humus and create a healthier environment for your tortoise.
