How to Keep Sea Anemones

Although sea anemones have a reputation among marine aquarium keepers as being fairly easy to keep, some species are much easier to care for than others. When you choose your sea anemone, research the species available to you, and select one of the smaller, stronger varieties, such as the bubble tip anemone or the saddle carpet anemone. The survival of your sea anemone also depends upon your buying a healthy one to start with, so make your selections carefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the different types of sea anemone. Choose one that has a good track record of survival in captivity and likes warm water. Learn what degree of salinity it needs in its water as well.

    • 2

Set up your aquarium with a filter and a power pump to imitate a sea current. This will carry food to your anemone.

    • 3

Acquire a salt mix designed for saltwater aquariums, and mix water for your tank to the salinity your species of anemone needs. Check the concentration with an aquarium hygrometer.

    • 4

Buy an anemone that does not display any signs of ill health. It should not have a slack mouth, oddly shaped tentacles or evident tears or damage, and it should not be white in color. It should be attached to something and sticky to the touch, and it should react when you touch it.

    • 5

Feed your anemone once or twice a week by dropping small pieces of fresh seafood or fish into the tank near the anemone. Remove any uneaten scraps after half an hour.

    • 6

Check the tank every few days to make sure the filter is cleaning it properly and the salinity is still at the right level.
