Bunny Cage Ideas

Whether you raise rabbits or have a bunny as a family pet, there are plenty of ideas to consider to make the rabbit's cage a comfortable home that also will meet all its needs. Aside from the obvious conveniences such as a litter box, rabbits need room and opportunity to exercise, to enjoy baby toys, and they need a soft place to rest. There are many cage styles such as indoor, outdoor, wire and wooden, and they come in various shapes such as rectangular and hexagon.
  1. Size Considerations

    • A cage for a pet rabbit should measure at least four or five times the length of the rabbit when it is an adult and at least twice its width. The cage also needs to be high enough for the rabbit to stand up in comfortably. Dwarf and mini-bunnies typically are more active than regular-size bunnies, so they still require lots of room even though they may be smaller in size.

    Necessities

    • Rabbit cages need litter boxes. Wooden frame hutches tend to retain the urine smell. Some cages have a pull out litter tray located on the bottom of the cage. Some cages come on wheels, which is very convenient if you want to temporarily move the cage to another room without having to carry it. Make sure the cage has a soft rest area; a folded towel will do. Wire floors are hard on bunnies' feet. For this reason the cage should have a solid floor.

    Exercise

    • It is important for rabbits to get daily exercise. Some cages are made with a loft so the rabbit gets exercise just by going up and down the ramp. Hang some toys from the top of the cage so the rabbit has to stretch to reach them for further exercise. If you allow your bunny out of its cage temporarily, make a ramp for it to go in and out.

    Special Touches

    • Your pet rabbit might enjoy a synthetic sheepskin rug and a small hiding area. You may keep some snacks inside the cage such as a fruit or vegetable snack. When you house rabbits outdoors in hutches, you may want to consider a small animal heating pad, especially if you live in a harsh, cold environment. The pad will not reach hot temperatures but will feel cozy and warm.
