How To's for Outdoor Bunny Cages

Care and cleaning for an outdoor rabbit cage is just as necessary as the regular care and cleaning of an indoor rabbit cage. Rabbits are clean animals that prefer their home to be tidy and kept clean of mess, debris or waste. Taking care of an outdoor bunny cage will also help keep your rabbit healthy, reduce bacteria and the development of mold or other potentially hazardous materials, and even reduce the smell of the cage.

Instructions

Place a waterproof base in the bottom of the cage and then create layers of newspaper and hay. Both newspaper and hay will help absorb waste, dirt and smells, but will have to be removed and replaced on a regular basis. Check the bottom of the cage every other day and clean as necessary.

    • 2

Set up a litter box for the rabbit in a corner of the cage -- this is one reason why a larger cage may be a good idea for most bunnies. Shred newspaper to line the litter box or use sawdust pellets in the box. Clean out the litter box every day or every other day and replace the litter on a regular basis.

    • 3

Wipe down the outside of the litter box and the rest of the cage with vinegar on a regular basis. If the vinegar smells too strong, use club soda. Never use bleach or other harsh chemicals that may harm the rabbit. Wipe down surfaces with a clean, damp cloth after using vinegar or club soda to remove any residue or lingering scent.

Empty out and refill the food and water containers on a daily basis. Clean the containers at least once a week and dry them thoroughly before refilling.
